My Contract Ends; Now What?

“When one door closes another door opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” ~Alexander Graham Bell

Today, I was informed that my long term substitute teacher contract ends 12/21/2016. I have been a sub for the past 4 years. I work in a new classroom or school every year for an entire school year.

When my principal told me I had 8 days left, I was in shock. I wasn’t devastated though. I was actually shocked that God answered my prayer so abruptly. His ‘MO’(method of operation) for me is always in a jarring manner. Yeah, I’m that chick.

I had been complaining to my hubby that I can’t get any work done on my lunch break. I felt like I was rushing through everything at night and losing lots of sleep. I also had no time to work out like I need to in order to remain diabetes-free. I actually said a prayer this weekend and told God I needed a break so I could give my business the care and attention it needed.

Revelations 3:8 “I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.”

Since my prayer has been answered, I’ve got work to do. I’m going to be intentional and walk through this door that God has opened for me. My contract ending was actually a blessing for me and just what I needed to #JUMP like Steve Harvey suggests.

So, what am I going to do when my contract ends?

  • Get my devotion time back on track. Lately, I’ve been rushing in the mornings and would settle for listening to a CD of my pastor.
  • Work-out Monday through Friday and pick back up my strength training
  • Set days to blog and stick with it
  • Reach out to organizations and groups for speaking engagements
  • Work on my new book 3 days a week for at least an hour a day
  • Create a more organized home – it’s a jungle right now (Don’t judge me)
  • Create more content and products for my customers and readers
  • Network, network, network

I’m sharing this with you so you can hold me accountable. I need to lose 15-20lbs to take my A1C number back below the diabetic threshold. I want to create content and products to sell to bring in income to replace that which I am losing.

My contract ending was the best thing that could happen to me at this particular time in my life. 2017 is on the horizon and there is so much for me to do.

I used to want the words “She tried” on my tombstone. Now I want “She did it.”  ~Katherine Dunham

  3. Congrats on closing one chapter and writing a new one already. It sounds like things are really fall in place for you.

My home is a jungle as well, I’m trying to get it together so it works better for everyone.

  4. God is faithful! When we pray, we better believe he’s going to answer us — even if it’s a whisper or a fleeting thought, he hears us. Best wishes to you. I know he’ll use you to bless others. 🙂

  5. Well, from the sounds of it, you are on the right track, and your end is off to a great start. I like that you are seeing what some people would view as a tragedy, as a blessing.

  6. I’m excited for you! I am in this very same space right now and I am totally trusting God to open doors in 2017. I left my job in august. I have been working hard on the rebranding that I felt I needed and ready to go full throttle in 2017! Here is to a great year for us both! ?

  7. Sounds like you have a plan and things are going to be just fine. God has a bigger plan and look how he works.
I’m excited to see how things fall into place for you.

  8. I can’t wait to see the awesome things you’ll do in 2017. God has a way of nudging us to move on into even greater things then what we could image for ourselves. Trust in it, be blessed.

  9. GOD’s timing is perfect! As long as you stay to the plan he’s given you, you’ll achieve everything you want!

  10. Oh, how I can relate. So much to do and only 24 hours a day to get it all done. Cheers to your new chapter!

  11. Can I be honest? I never knew there was a such thing as a long term substitute teacher position. Being a sub to me always meant temporary. I know it sucks anytime something long term get cut short but this is definitely a blessing. I think this will definitely give you more time to get something secure on a full time basis for whichever direction you really want to go.

  12. Oh wow! Sometimes we have to be pushed out of our comfort zones but it looks like you’re embracing the change and ready to kick 2017 in the face 🙂
